The Soho
Society is the amenity society for Soho, working to preserve and enhance
the amenity of the area for local businesses, residents, workers and visitors.
It is consulted by Westminster City Council on all planning and licensing
applications and renewals.
The
Soho Society also produces The Soho Clarion (the local news-letter) on
a quarterly basis and runs the annual Soho Festival.
The Festival
which is held on the second Sunday in July each year is the closest thing
Soho has to a village féte. Attractions include: bric-a-brac; jumble;
massage and meditation; books and home-made cakes; local artists and all
kinds of food stalls. The jazz notes of Dick Laurie’s Elastic Band
and other local musicians play throughout the day.
The
Soho Society was also responsible for the establishment of the Museum of Soho.
Founded in 1984, the museum is a social history archive of objects, papers
and oral history. With no public premises, the museum mounts occasional
exhibitions and the archive may be visited by appointment.
