The Soho
Family Centre runs five main projects: child minding; daycare; pre-school
education; a Chinese community project; a Bengali community project and
a family drop-in.
The Drop-In is often the first point of contact for new parents or
families new to the area. As well as a place to meet, it offers advice
and support on parenting, welfare, health and benefits.
The Child Minding Project provides daycare
in a group setting and allows local people to become child minders. We
presently have seven minders, three from Bangladesh and one each from
Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Croatia. The richness of the cultural
diversity in our child carers is one of the project’s great strengths.
The Chinese Project aims to build confidence and capacity within
the local Chinese community and to provide the tools to forge links across
communities.
The Bengali Community Project enables many people to access qualifications,
employment and volunteering opportunities within the community.
The Pre-School Project serves twenty 3-5 year olds, many of whom have English as a second
language. It gives the children a positive experience of group learning
and equips them with the self esteem, confidence, language and numeracy
skills necessary to allow them to successfully transfer to formal schooling.
